SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER
It seems that the Pet Insurance industry has exploded in recent years. As veterinary medicine becomes more and more sophisticated, and expensive, pet insurance may be an option to help provide a financial “cushion” against the cost of both routine and specialized or emergency treatment for your pets. There is no industry-wide standard for pet insurance, and coverage can very widely from company to company, so it helps to keep the following in mind when shopping around to find the best insurance coverage for your needs.
- Verify your veterinarian is accepted under the policy.
- Make sure that the policy will cover your pet’s illness or injury for as long as treatment is necessary. Some companies will only cover treatment up to a certain financial limit or for a certain period of time.
- Check that it provides the range of benefits that you want. Many companies offer more than one plan with varying degrees of coverage.
- Check the limits of coverage. Some companies may offer less payment for treatment than others.
- Check what is covered under “vet” fees. Some things to consider are pre-existing, hereditary and congenital conditions, veterinary diets, and behavioral counseling.
- If you have multiple pets, inquire if there is a discount for covering more than one.
- Find out how long it takes to process a claim.
As with most things in life, you very often get what you pay for when purchasing pet insurance. Be wary of misleadingly low premiums. Make sure you know what you are buying before you commit.
