PET-PROOFING YOUR HOME
We all need to do our part to keep our pets as healthy and happy as possible. Since they are naturally inquisitive but cannot always distinguish potential dangers, our pets need our help in keeping them safe. The following easy and practical tips will help ensure the welfare of our furry family members around the house.
- Screen windows
- Keep houseplants out of reach (dieffenbachia, elephant ear, spider plants, poinsettias, holly, and mistletoe are poisonous)
- Unplug, cover, or remove electrical cords & discourage puppy and kitten chewing
- Don’t leave a fire, stove burner, iron, or space heater unattended
- Don’t leave small, sharp, or easily swallowed objects lying around
- Don’t leave plastic bags lying around
- Store household cleaners, as well as medicines, shampoos, suntan lotion, and personal care items, out of pet’s reach
- Keep washer and dryer lids closed and toilet lids down
IN THE GARAGE & YARD
- Before driving your car, make sure your cat is not near your engine
- Antifreeze and windshield washer fluid are appetizing to dogs and cats. Keep containers out of reach, tightly closed, and wipe up any spills.
- Paint, gasoline, lawn treatments, insecticides, and other chemicals should be stored out of reach.
- Keep pets away from lawns and gardens treated with chemicals
- Remember that some outdoor plants, like ivy, are poisonous
- Stow garden tools and lawn equipment away from pets
- Keep swimming pools and hot tubs covered or fenced
- Consider a tall perimeter or electrical fence around property to reduce the risk of a pet leaving your property
