TITERS TESTING
There has been a shift in vaccine protocols in recent years, and the subject of yearly booster immunizations has become somewhat controversial. Vaccinations produced today are very safe and effective for most pets. They work by stimulating the immune systems to produce antibodies (disease-fighting cells) specific for a disease. Antibodies are produced upon exposure to a disease or to a vaccination.
A titer is a measurement of the amount of antibodies found in a patient’s blood that can tell the doctor if a patient is still immune to a disease or indicate if further vaccination in warranted. The use of titer tests can help the doctor decide what immunizations your pet needs, rather than adhering to a generic recommendation.
The use of titer testing can be especially beneficial to those pets that are geriatric, immune-compromised, or have a chronic degenerative disease, since these animals are at the highest risk for complications stemming from vaccinations. We offer the option of titers testing for some diseases on a yearly basis and then vaccinate accordingly. Texas law requires rabies vaccination be given regardless of titers.
